What was it? It was graupel.

At the start of this hour a rain shower passed over my house mixed with the distinctive clinking of some kind of ice pellets. It isn't nearly cold enough to snow at ground level today, but as the weather girl just explained on TV, it was aloft. With snow flakes bouncing up and down, melting, refreezing and collecting more moisture, eventually it falls as something akin to a soft version of hail called... graupel.

Very interesting to see the TV weather radar-loop as a little storm intensified very briefly, and only right over my neighborhood, producing my share of the graupel for today.
