My 10 unpopular sports-fannish opinions

from [livejournal.com profile] dlgood

Most people are probably tired of my tv opinions from years past so here we go in a different direction

1 International football, known as soccer here is fun to play but utterly unwatchable.

2 American-style pro football has turned into a silly game of 'keep-away.'

3 College football has always been the child of the press, since Walter Camp decided to declare the best players from the few teams in the Northeast that he was able to watch "All-Americans " back in the 1800's. No one will benefit from the switch to a major college championship play-off in the long run other than sportswriters. Football players (and basketball players), as everyone knows, have rarely been students. It's time to run them out of colleges into a minor league system. The recent on field-fiasco at the U of Miami, is just an extreme case of the damage having these pseudostudent-athletes does to the university/ college as a whole. Giving scholarship money to men or women for their athletic abilities is insane in the long run.

4 The baseball season is too long. It's bad enough to play a World Series in St. Louis in late October. In Detroit, Toronto, Chicago or Boston, it's nuts. The season should be shortened at least by couple weeks. It would be nice to switch back to day games for the series as well. The ratings would probably drop but the actual number of people watching to avoid work might actually increase!

5 Turning around the old saying, why in the world would anyone play rugby without ' all the armor.' Have you ever seen what people look like after a hard fought rugby game?

6 Having mutiple favorite teams in the same sport is not only easier on the ego, it's more rewarding.

7 George Steinbrenner types, Woody Hayes types, and Vince Lombardi types are losers and always will be because they'll never be pleased with less than winning. Everybody can't win at once. Sometimes doing better than expected ought to be enough.

8 Some sports like basketball are far more entertaining when the players are less than great. Pro basketball is dull, even a tad silly. College basketball is fun. High School basketball can be exciting. That goes for men's or women's basketball.

9 It's rare that watching the game in person is more fun than watching it at TV. Other things at the game can be more fun than sitting at home. But the game itself, no. Unless you love the ability to curse and have the players hear you!

10 The best place to sit at a football game is moderately high about the 30 yard line. About the worst place is low near the 50 yard line. Nose-bleed high with binoculars anywhere is a better seat than a few rows off the field anywhere.

This being almost the first thing to greet my eyes upon awakening, I am almost stunned into silence. ALMOST.

This is absolutely the only sport I have ever been able to bear watching! And it was only by becoming totally mesmerized by a game on TV one day that I realized it! It never stops. They just keep moving. And "they" are young, toned, fit, generally European and South American men, scantily dressed and sweating.

But all that aside, I leave you with two words: Luis Figo.

Good morning! ;o)

Blame Canada! ;o)

Ice hockey has similar flow, but it doesn't put me to sleep.

Well, we can't agree on everything.

...we can't agree on everything.

True. And I grew up around ice hockey players, of course, big, dumb louts with missing teeth, for the most part, hee! Buried in pounds of knitted synthetics and plastic. Not the same appeal, at all!

;o)

Congrats, BTW, to your Cards.

Ah, that must be what all the hoo-ha in the living room was about last night. Is it finally over for another year? I can't see playing baseball in the snow for some reason...

;o)

Oh, I have to disagree with you on being there. I once had floor seats at a game between Chicago and the Cavs (basketball). Watching Dennis Rodman was one of the most beautiful experiences I have ever had. The man moves like an angel. I'd watch him, thinking he was completely blowing off the game and the suddenly, beautifully, he was exactly where he needed to be. Grace. Amazing Grace. You don't get that same feeling of grace on the tube.

I sit 16 rows up in the corner of the enzone at Maryland. THose seats were pretty darn sweet for our win today over FSU. Gotta love that college football atmosphere.
