MU-KU

After the game last night I should say something. I have nothing nasty to say about Kansas this morning. They might well have won, if they'd had a tougher game here and there earlier on their schedule.

There was a penalty early on against Missouri where the replay showed the Missouri guy got caught retaliating against some serious bad behavior by a Kansas player. It was at that point I could see just how nervous and frustrated Kansas was. It was clear if Missouri could calm down first, Kansas was in serious trouble. Kansas was frustrated the whole first half. The offense got big plays, but couldn't score. Kansas' offensive coordinator up in the press box looked like he was ready to tear his hair out. Their defense was befuddled. Even the KU placekicker's nerves were so bad, he couldn't do anything right. But Kansas proved they were a good team in the second half. The final score may have been closer than the game really was, since Missouri stopped playing their ever-changing defense in the third quarter. But Kansas did earn every point.

Missouri was thought to have a slim chance to win the North this season, but nobody picked Kansas. I think Kansas coach Mark Mangino deserves to be the coach of the year in the conference, if not the whole country.

Who do I think should be Heisman winner this year? Tim Tebow of Florida. They can talk about McFadden from Arkansas, but Arkansas' record was spotty at best. More damning, when the game was on the line in overtime the other day, Arkansas went with someone else. McFadden wasn't even on the field as a decoy. That's not the hallmark of a Heisman winner. Daniel from Missouri is a cool customer, but he just doesn't have Tebow's athletic skills.

The year Missouri hired Gary Pinkel, the man they really wanted was Dennis Franchione. Franchione didn't give MU much of a thought since Alabama wanted him as well. With him out of the picture two of the leading candidates for Missouri were Pinkel of Toledo and Gary Darnell of Western Michigan. Western Michigan had beaten Missouri that year, and Toledo and W. Michigan played each other for the MAC title that year. Toledo won, but I was impressed by W. Michigan's defense. Missouri did seem to pick the right guy. Darnell's career as a head coach at W. Michigan faded. But... when Dennis Franchione was forced out at Texas A&M this weekend, his defensive coordinator, Gary Darnell, was named interim coach for their coming bowl game.

Last night's game just goes to show you how important it is to maintain a solid effort and just execute your game. Mizzou kept more cool and that was a big chunk of the difference. And how hard it can be for 19-year old kids to do that when it's the first time they're on the national stage. Still a great year for both KU and Mizzou, and a game both teams should still be proud of no matter how frustrating that first half must have been. It was good to see that they didn't quit.

To me, right now my Heisman list is:

1. Tim Tebow, Florida
2. Chase Daniel, Mizzou
3. Dennis Dixon, Oregon
4. Darren McFadden, Arkansas
5. Colt Brennan, Hawaii

I don't really take it as a knock that McFadden came out for that play. Arkansas has a great backfield (that fullback is great too) - Felix Jones was a monster himself. More damning to me, is that McFadden had too many average games.
