Watch out, Little Bit! The Buffalo is comin' back.

Those of us of a certain age in the US fondly remember 'buffalo' nickels in our every day change. They are coming back as of Monday! http://www.usmint.gov/pressroom/index.cfm?action=photo#2004NickelSeries
For those too lazy to click, the bison is smaller, and a new portrait of Jefferson will be on the heads side. I sort of miss the Indian bust, but someone might find the mixed-tribe protrait of the old one offensive these days.

Hey, that's pretty cool! I'm very fond of Canadian money because I find the images so interesting. Our dimes are the prettiest things around :) And we always have special coins floating around to commemorate or celebrate important holidays or people. Glad you're getting an old favourite back!

The US mint is following the Canadian lead. Our nickels and quarters have been having commemoratives, too. It's a good sign the coin costs a lot less to mint than its face value. Since the government expects people to pull those commemoratives out of their change and keep them, it's a way to tax them without a whisper of complaint. Like people who collect unused postage stamps, only the folks who want to keep them have to pay the price.
