But is it pizza?

So what is pizza?

I didn't grow up with pizza. The first pizza I ever had was awful. My mother bought a one-box mix (brand shall remain nameless) that was then advertised on TV: Terrible crust, imitation parmesan cheese, nothing approaching mozzarella cheese, tomato sauce closer to tomato soup than anything else. It was years before the family tried again. We went to a Shakey's Pizza place. Very far from Italian atmosphere (One of the first Russian language instructors I met moonlighted playing Dixieland banjo at a Shakey's), but the pizza was pretty good.

After many years, I've decided I like my pizza on thin crust, Italian sausage, black olives, onions; cut into squares or diamonds to make it easier to eat than in wedges and to avoid the hassle of trying to divvy up a small even number of slices by an odd number of people. Red bell pepper okay, pepperoni okay, mushrooms okay. No pineapple, ham, hamburger, or anchovies.

How about you?

I don't remember the 1st time I ate pizza. I do remember that my family had it often & I liked it; in fact, I remember that I used to think there could be no such thing as bad pizza. That lasted till the 1st time I ate school cafeteria pizza--a rectangular cardboardy slice w/a dried-out burnt top, a little curled up for some reason. And awful-tasting. I'm pretty sure it contributed to my decision to start bringing my own lunch to school. At least it didn't turn me off to pizza completely.

I don't think I've ever made my own pizza. My favorite is Amy's organic pesto pizza, which has cherry tomato slices instead of tomato sauce, because its sauce is the pesto. It also has broccoli. My 2nd favorite is Amy's organic mushroom & black olive pizza. More generally, I like whole wheat crust &, in addition to the toppings I already mentioned, onions, garlic, basil leaves (if pesto isn't available), hot peppers, & stretchy, stretchy cheese (w/no animal rennet). I liked pepperoni when I ate meat.
