Phil Rizzuto died this morning. I remember seeing him play in the World Series in the 1950's probably against the Brooklyn Dodgers. He was a slick shortstop on a team full of stars. He broadcast on radio for many years after he quit playing. His high pitched, nasal, heavily accented voice was one of those things that annoyed those of us in the countryside about New York City. If he'd been in any other town with that voice, he'd have never been hired as a radio sports correspondent. But like so much else that annoys, you got used to his voice. I miss hearing it.

My dad grew up a Dodgers fan, hated the Yankees, yet found Rizzuto tolerable because he was so corny.

In other news, how about that Rick Ankiel. That's a nice story for the guy. I still remember reading about him when he was setting the world on fire in the minors the first time around, and being jealous that my local teams never seemed to have such a prospect.
