I thought this was supposed to be a desert.

I came out this morning and saw this. Among the tiny weeds, that's moss on the ground.

My parents' yard is *full* of weeds at the moment. They have a weed-sprayer guy who comes around, but he needs to double-up his visits. Those decorative stones look weird dotted with green!

Though they are decorative, those aren't "decorative stones" per se. That just the natural look of the ground in the back. My yard was once the course of the nearby New River. The soil is full of rocks of all descriptions, lava, sandstone, even fossil charcoal swept down from the mountains. It looks great with the cactus, but it would not be much fun to plant flowers in, as is. ;o)

I do believe in decorative stonework provided by nature, because that's how the desert looked to me everywhere: as though someone had laid it out precisely, so much space between each growing thing and the proportion of upright to round to spreading forms just so. So many dark greens to so many silvery cholla, thick cactus pads to feathery sage, just enough red and waxy yellow petals against sandstone colors and intense blue. I'm an East Coast girl, used to battling natives and invasives somewhere between forest and jungle -- got your bittersweet right here, buddy! -- and I never could get used to the distant politeness of the desert plants.

I know what you mean. The prettier parts of the desert are park-like without trying.
