I'm not a fan of Lost so I skipped the big event of the evening for most of you. I did however watch the first episodes of Just Legal and Invasion. I can't say too little about Invasion. It really does look like a horror B-movie drawn out forever into a soap opera. It's neither so bad it warrants more discussion nor is it my cup of tea at all. Just Legal on the other hand was exactly what I was looking for last night, a real stinker. Imagine Bad News Bears Lawyers with Don Johnson playing Walter Mathau's part, and instead of a whole team of misfits, just that one geeky kid who never had a base hit in his life who has to go to bat at the critical moment. Brillant, but geeky academic whiz-kid, graduates from law school and passes the California state Bar Exam at the age of 18. Surprisingly no law firm in town is the least bit interested in hiring a geeky 18-year-old as a new member. Instead the fellow contiunes with his old job as a caddy at the local golf course where one of his regulars is Broken-down Useless Alchoholic Lawyer (patent-pending). If you can't figure out the rest of the plot go rent Bad News Bears only instead of the kiddie league championship imagine a murder trial. All it needed was Carmen playing in the background and the two lawyers wearing yellow suit jackets with 'Chico's Bail Bonds' written on the back. The younger actor isn't that bad. Don Johnson isn't too bad in the alchoholic depressed part of his role, either. But, I'll bet whoever hired him without screen testing him giving a passionate closing speech for a jury is ruing the day! It was the worst courtroom speech performance I've ever seen! I think we can safely say this one will be gone before New Year's. Once in a while, I just love bad TV!
