Once in awhile the Family Page comes up with a doozy. Misconceptions on parade:

Why do people insist on talking about introversion as if it were a disability?
Although they only represent an estimated 30 percent of the population, introverts contribute greatly to society. It does burn me up that grade school teachers often confuse extroversion with intelligence. But, this attitude of 'those pitiful abnormal folks also contribute' is really aggravating.
They're not slow, inattentive or shy, all common misperceptions. I haven't noticed that shyness and introversion are mutually exclusive. Have you?
Generally, introverts are intelligent problem-solvers with good concentration. They frequently are gifted in math, science, music or art and enjoy working alone.
The last part is true. We like to work alone. The rest may be true for some of us. But expecting an introverted child to be gifted is also a mistake.
ways to help your introverted child
With teachers: Explain at the beginning of the school year that your child is introverted, not shy, inattentive or slow Oh, Lord! Just what an introvert loves; having mommy make sure s/he gets lots of extra attention.
At family functions: Explain to family members your introverted child's energy drains quickly, even in the company of people he knows. Where do they get this stuff? It's not about energy. It's 'I can't think with all these clowns around bothering me. Let me go off and think.' It's worse when a child is young and their interests are narrow. Put an introverted kid in a lively discussion of something they are interested in and they won't want to go off by themselves at all!
