I may not have gotten as much of the storm in the Pacific last night as
mamculuna did of the one in the Atlantic. But, I got plenty! The wind barely started to blow last night when my power went off. Then it proceeded to rain like it's never rained here at my house in Phoenix since I've lived here. It often rains hard here, but usually only for a brief few minutes. It rained hard here for a good hour which means I got maybe two inches of rain with that and afterward it rained steadily, but not hard for about three hours. I easily could have gotten 1/3 of a whole year's typical rain fall in less than 6 hours.
It's too hot here in early September to hang around with the power off. So, after the first blast had subsided for about ten minutes I went over to my sister's to spend the night. I had no trouble opening my garage door, but sooned discovered (after six years of living here!) that there is no way to keep the garage door up with the power off. A few minutes of thought and a step ladder under the door solved the problem.
My street was fine, my sister's street was fine, but the north-south streets between here and there were rivers. I would not even try the short way which floods in a few minutes in much lesser storms. I took the long way around and the street that way, surprise, surprise, had about two inches of water even in the crown in the middle lane. It's a good thing all the larger residential streets are at least five lanes or I would have worried about making it through at all.
My sister's dog had a tough evening. Between the thunder and lightning, having to go out in the pouring rain to do her business, and having me show up she got overexcited. She had trouble settling down for the night, especially after she figured out I wasn't leaving. Nothing major, but clearly it was one wound up dog. Today isn't going to help her because one of my nieces is bringing her family from Tucson for a night tonight for the Labor Day Holiday.
At any rate I got up early this morning, slipped out before my sister got up, and came home. The power was back on. But the clocks showed it had on been off for over ten hours, or till about 4:00 this morning. The street lights were on, the fridge was running, and as soon as I turned it back on, the AC ran cheerfully. Phoenix is no place to be without power!
