In the 1800's they called them panics. By the early 20th century they were calling them depressions because it didn't sound so bad. Then there was that big DEPRESSION and nobody wanted to go through that again so they became recessions. By the 1970's the government had so defined the word "recession" so that no one would ever be sure they'd been in one till it was mostly over. I think given the recent declines world-wide we might want to start using the word "panic" again.
