I know the kids don't want a lot of hassle, so I try to pass out Halloween candy with a minimum of fuss over costumes and figuring out where they might have walked from. The costumes they fret about being just right for their personas each year go by in a blur, but things they say sometimes linger longer after. This year's best:
The traditional very young girl to younger little brother, disgustedly, "You hafta say, 'Trick-r-treat!'"
One of two girls proudly and with satisfaction telling me the secret of their success in the shared task of getting the door opened for them, "We rang *and* we knocked!"
The prize winner for this year, a boy to me with surprise in his voice, "Hey, I saw you *last* Halloween!"
