A new Native American tribal reservation may be established just a few miles south of me, actually between me and the site of both the pro football stadium and pro hockey arena. Is it some some sacred site being returned for humanitarian reasons? No, the Tohono O'odham tribe (formerly known as the Pima tribe) wants to use the land to build a resort and casino. Casinos are not allowed in this state except on reservation land and even then limited by agreement between the state and the tribes. By standing agreement with the state, this tribe would be allowed to build a casino here if the Obama administration agrees to make the land reservation land. That should not prove too difficult since the land was purchased on the open market to replace reservation land the Bush administration bought to build a dam and reservoir.
In terms of numbers, I don't think we really need another casino. There are several on older reservation land on the east, and south sides of town, and more within a couple hours drive. But the location on the west side near the growing sports and entertainment district in Glendale probably is a good one for everyone involved. The tribe thinks that by the time they can get it finished, the economy will have turned around. I hope there are right about that part of it.
