DW seems to have gotten a lot more more interest than the other alternatives to LJ through their invitation policy. By hook or by crook most of us seem to have landed a invitation, and I presume that anyone who didn't get one in this batch will be able to within a few weeks if they so desire. I suspect that those people who joined over there for a reason other than 'everyone's doing it' will get a lot more use out of DW than the rest of us. There are plenty of reasons why there is unlikely to be a mass exodus, and plenty of signs many people are just trying to be sure they won't be left behind, but don't really intend to do much on DW.

Personally I think DW looks nice and works well enough. It is a bit confusing, though. I remember when I joined LJ that I thought some other option besides 'friending' would be nice where you could read other people's public entries without letting them read your more personal stuff in return. DW has that. But the way they've implemented it, you have to separately choose to read each person's journal and let them read your 'friends only' things. This no doubt is great for megalomaniacs who wish to allow others to read their personal thoughts without having their 'friends page' cluttered up with the thoughts of others. But I think most of us would prefer a system where you'd either select one box that allowed you to just read 'their' stuff or another box that allowed you to read 'their' stuff plus allowing them to read your locked entries.

Cross-posting has been a great sport recently. I don't know for sure, but I'd guess that most people who've had trouble with it, haven't looked all over the editor over there for all the boxes you have to check to do it. I learned my lesson just signing up over there when about half way through the process about half of my preferences had been totally ignored because I hadn't clicked on every last button.

Surfing around I see that the DW mystique is wearing off quickly. People, no doubt tired of jumping through all the hoops over there, have stopped canceling subscriptions to openID temporary journals and subscribing to the real journals for the same people as they pop up. A number of people have set up journals and left them be without all worrying about subscribing/granting access to anyone which is exactly what you'd expect if they don't intend to use them unless they have to.

Some of us, including me, have had trouble uploading icons over there. I think that could probably be fixed fairly easily at DW's end, but I don't expect them to. Ah, well, there is a reason I keep an old computer around with older software, just in case.

What will I use my DW for? Well, I keep thinking of having a creative writing journal. I used my throw-away Greatest Journal (remember them?) briefly for that, but I didn't really expect anyone to see any of it. I got 'caught' faster than I expected. If you think anyone else is going to read it, you have to try to do things like make sense and not make a complete fool of yourself. ;o)
