There was an article in the local paper about the Oriental supermarket near me. Unfortunately it wasn't put on-line, because it is an interesting story. It started as a hole-in-wall specialty grocery in a strip mall, like you'd see in a lot of places, but the owner of this one knew the right things to order. He now has two full-sized supermarkets and is soon planning to open another in Tucson even with the weak economy.
Most interesting to me was the picture of the owner with the article. There is also a restaurant in the store. It reminds you of a typical strip-mall Chinese restaurant, but it's not. The food is different and it's presented differently. My sister was poring over the menu the last time we were there, in hopes something would jump out at her. She normally orders cashew chicken every time we go to any Chinese place, because she knows what that is. A gentleman came over to our table and pointed to the menu and said 'try this.' Clearly he was in charge of the restaurant, not just a waiter. My sister tried it and loved it. Turns out he was not just in charge of the restaurant he owns the whole store and the now growing supermarket chain. He was putting a lot of effort into the restaurant that day helping a random walk-in customer. I imagine he puts that much effort into all of it which is why he's successful.
