A couple of months ago I checked my drip irrigation system in the front yard to see if it was all right for the summer. It was all fine then. However now that it's above 105 degrees everyday my desert marigolds were starting to look brown. This is not good since given any water at all they spread all over everything. So I had to search around in the bed for twenty minutes to find the dripper and indeed it wasn't letting any water through. Five minutes later, new dripper installed, problem solved. But who knows how much damage I did to the plants finding the dripper.

Just to be sure I left the drippers running and made a quick check around. I heard something like air blowing up through the gravel under one of my yuccas. I quick get the shovel and start digging. Fortunately it was a line end that had been buried and lost its dripper head over time. If it had been a hole in the main line much further below, I shudder to think how long it might have taken to fix. At any rate I went off to the store to buy some hose to get the head above ground where it belongs and fittings to connect to the old hose. I came home and only then noticed the other dripper under there (there had once been a tree in the spot) was dripping in almost exactly the same spot which might eventually cause problems. So I extended both hoses and put on new drippers.

The open-ended hose might have caused a pressure drop which caused the dripper on the other side of the yard to clog and fail. It's a never ending battle to keep things working.
