I was thinking about why I've been watching so little TV these days. The two shows I'm watching the most these days are Castle and Bones which in are fairly similar in basis, but very different in detail. I burnt out long ago on cop shows, but these two are more than that. Castle is very well written and a bit on the glitzy side. Bones is more mundanely written and more on the work-a-day side. Maybe what I like about them is the main characters are people you'd like to have for friends. Bones is geeky to the point of being weird, at times whiny and frustratingly stubborn. But she's really nice compared, say, to the basically nasty lead woman character in Cold Case. Castle (like me) is goofy to the point of being annoying at times, but (unlike me) he really is charming. Booth is a little insulting with his talk about "squints." But he's a decent guy and a good friend to those around him. Beckett spends much of her time fending off Castle's flirting. But I have to say she's someone worth flirting with: smart and fun in her own way.
I'm planning to watch the premiere of V tonight knowing full well I probably won't watch it for the long run. I sincerely hope that like the newer BSG, the new V will be vastly superior to the original. The problem is that many big budget shows these days would work well for me as a movie or a mini-series, but, as full series, they all seem to evolve into soap operas which I have no taste for. My theory of the morning: Most men would rather watch sports because they like the tension, but would rather see someone win or lose and get on with their lives. Women, on the other hand seem to prefer soap operas, because they like the tension, but would rather leave the people with their guts tied up in knots.
Which brings us in a non-sequitur way to dancing shows and figure skating. Most men might not admit it, but they don't mind seeing dancing once in a while. It's fun to see pretty girls twirling around, even fun to see how athletic the guys have to be. But for guys, straight guys anyway, the fun part of dancing is being with the woman. I think the women enjoy the actual dancing more. Guys will watch figure skating, at least the women figure skating once in a while. Which is why the rating go way up at the Olympics. For people my age ballroom dancing went out of style with the old Arthur Murray Dance Party show back in the 1950's, but it's not that surprising it's made a comeback with a strong female audience.
