I got a nice surprise in the mail. My property tax bill for the year is only about 2/3 what it was last year. Since the property tax rates here tend to be so much smoke and mirrors, it's hard to guess what the bill will be, before it arrives. There is a chance that the school taxes this year were abnormally low for reasons I understand, but won't go into. If that is the case, it won't happen again in 2011. There is also a chance the value of the houses in my neighborhood have taken a bigger hit than in the rest of my town. Since I hope I won't have to move any time soon, that's not a problem.

I mentioned Beetle Bailey and The Shack back on Monday, I got a flier in the mail today announcing that the new expansion of the student center at Missouri is going to be Beetle Bailey themed and have an area called The Shack. I can just image the administrators who in my day were counting the days till the leases ran out on the whole strip of seedy bars, questionable diners and even a shady pool hall that included The Shack are turning over in their graves at the thought of The Shack being brought back. It seems the University already owned the land under them back in those days, but was only slowly closing the dives. There was a major riot my freshman year when they closed a different one of the bars which was notorious for serving beer to anyone who could pay, regardless of age. All the bars did it, but much in the spirit of' 'don't ask, don't tell', this place was open about it and had their lease terminated ahead of schedule.
