Uniform in their folly: American football wear

A lot of people are calling the new uniforms the University of Maryland wore during their football game with Miami hideous. They aren't *that* bad. I think "silly" is more fair. For those who didn't see them: Maryland state flag designs, black and yellow on one side of the helmet and the corresponding shoulder, red and white on the other side. Commentators have been defending Maryland, saying how Oregon's bug-ugly uniforms help them attract better players. They don't seem to notice that Oregon's uniforms have been more conservative lately and that California's equally ugly uniforms haven't done a thing for their recruiting. I can imagine Missouri following Maryland's lead in smearing the state flag all over the helmet. Red and blue stripes on one side would confuse Kansas. Bears on the other side would confuse Baylor. They could have the Latin words Salus populi fractured as they are on the flag to read Sa pop lus uli across the seat of the pants.

I mentioned the Arizona State "blackout" planned for this Friday against Missouri. From today's Arizona Republic newspaper:

We've been receiving e-mails from a lot of ASU fans and alums who aren't happy about the new uniforms. Many are upset about the change in logos, (from cute cartoon devil to flamy trident) but some are wondering why ASU would want to have a "blackout" when the team they're facing wears black and gold.

Evidently there are even some Sun Devil fans who want to protest the changes by calling for those opposed to wear gold Friday night.

So... they're opposed to black uniforms and a "blackout" for Missouri but they're going to wear gold. Thus the crowd will be... black and gold? Yeah that ought to work.

Indeed.
