This morning I'm waiting to go through one of the busiest intersections in my not so little suburb. The street I'm on is three lanes each way with a dedicated left-turn lane. I'm in the left hand through-lane because I want to make a left turn about a mile down the way. The light is red for me. It's a long light as the cross-street is as big and twice as busy as the one I'm on. As I wait, I notice across the way there is a pickup truck mostly in the left-turn lane facing me that is behind three or four other cars. I say mostly because it's partly in my lane. No big deal, there is a shopping area to the right on that side of the intersection and the truck has probably pulled out with not quite enough room into the left-turn lane. The left turners go first when the light changes. So no problem... Then I notice the truck backing up. What's he doing? Trying to straighten out? ... The driver's side door of truck opens and the driver gets out, holding on to the door. The light changes and the left turners beside and across from me are going. The pickup rolls slowly squarely into my lane with the driver obviously only barely able to keep it from going any farther. The light is about to change. I can't go down my lane. I'm not going to try the left turn lane. There is a car behind me that doesn't know what's going on. There are cars in both lanes beside me. But thankfully only one in the closest lane. The light changes and I go cross the intersection slowly and pull in behind the car that was beside me. Traffic closes in and the poor person who was behind me is temporarily trapped facing the pickup.

I glance at the pickup as I pass. It's grossly overloaded with all manner of items. I wonder once again why the wonderful state of Arizona doesn't require basic vehicle safety inspections as well as emissions inspections in order to renew our car licenses. This guy with his truck facing the wrong way with a dead engine and no brakes is probably going nowhere till the cops get there. I don't even have a cellphone to let them know...
