Raaaawk! Raaaawk!

It wasn't too long ago that I'd been thinking it had been a long time since I'd seen a raven. With all the rain we had last week and with more hurricane left-overs headed this way again in the next few days I raced out this morning and buzzed the weeds in my backyard. I'd carefully pulled the weeds out of my front yard over the weekend for the benefit of the neighbors. That is very effective and lasts a long time. But in back where no one can see, knocking them down is usually enough for a whole month. I guess it has been more than a week since I'd done the back. But we have had regular rain this monsoon season, and keeping ahead of the yard has been a real chore. Some nasty weedy grass has been trying to take over from the usual tumbleweed and mallows, this year. The stuff goes to seed almost as fast as it comes out of the ground, meaning it has to be dealt with very quickly in these unusually wet conditions.

As I was finishing I heard the distinctive deep voice of a raven, and soon saw it sitting on a light standard above one of the ball fields in the park on the other side of my back wall. I wonder if the heavy rains chased it out of a home in the washes to the west or maybe the floods just flushed his food out in the open where it's easier to see. Our neighborhood drains through the park and no doubt there are lizards and mice hiding in and along the way to the storm sewers. It's easier to live in the city than in the woods where I used to live, but I do like knowing there is still wild life around.

Speaking of wild life... Hearken! Quoth the Kitty, "Meow! Meow! Meow! (Hey, you haven't paid enough attention to me this morning!)"
