It will be on the news if Kim Kardasian, Justin Bieber and Donald Trump aren't doing things *far* more momentous today. But just in case, New Horizons swept past Pluto today (Just before 5:00 am my time) at a distance of less than 13,800 km. By comparison the diameter of the Earth is around 12,700 km. There will be pictures. But no selfies, and no instant gratification. Pluto is well over 4 light-hours from here.
ETA: If my math is good this morning, at the speed of New Horizons we could reach the next nearest star, Proxima Centauri, in around 94,000 years. Beam me up, Scotty!
