I decided to watch TV last night even though I wasn't in the mood for Castle. Instead I saw an episode of Blindspot.
The set up is familiar. Someone has lost her memory and is trying to find out who she is with a lot of help, ala John Doe of a few years ago. It's also akin to recent shows like Bones and Castle where an outsider fits into an established group of crime fighters. Last night's episode was kind of a nod to how weird that would be in real life.
The group consists of a boss, whose writing screamed, 'Hey, I'm morally ambiguous!' before the scene in which she's shown to be just that. There is the star, our tattooed, amnesia lady, who obviously was trained by some covert government agency. There's macho away-team leader, who for no particular reason correctly guesses amnesia lady was his grade school sweetheart who disappeared when she was 11. Then there is the diversity duo, who are there to be black and Hispanic actors in supporting roles on the team. The last member of the team stays in the office, and wears a lab coat all the time so we'll know she's the science/tech person.
It turns out tech person is played by the only actress I'm familiar with, though I have seen the boss before in similar roles. She is played by my current favorite C-list celebrity, Ashley Johnson. Ashley isn't pretty enough or distinctive enough looking to be a good candidate for A or B-list status, but she certainly can act. She has a great face for radio as they say. She is famous in video-game circles for her work as a lead voice actress, most notably for her critically acclaimed role as 13-year-old Ellie in the popular game The Last of Us. In Blindspot she plays the person who seems to be the only one who actually knows anything. The boss and the action characters all seem to stay around in the office moaning, 'Gee, we don't know anything,' till she shows up from her lab area and says, 'I just found this clue.' She's very much a background character, but she does it with some style.
The show itself is super violent. Not kiddie fare by any means. It's reasonably well written, though you can guess from the premise that the reveal of amnesia lady's past is the extent of the story. It's okey dokey and will probably be on for awhile if you might be curious about catching an episode sometime.
