A woman just knocked on my door and handed me a card. "The company I represent is holding a raffle for a $1000 grocery gift card..." (company name not mentioned, the first red flag) "I just need your last name and phone number to call you when you win." (not if I win... Of course it instantly dawns on me where I've heard of odd grocery gift card giveaways before... on the phone)
The scam is that if you give the nice lady your last name and phone number then legally her company (obviously a telemarketer of some sort) has the right to call you as much as they want and you can't threaten them with violating the do-not-call list because you agreed, blah, blah, blah.
I handed the card back and said I didn't want it. She wasn't surprised and didn't try to convince me otherwise. Obviously, I wasn't the first to say no.
