There are many hummingbirds, both in terms of kinds and numbers, in Arizona. We had a few back in Missouri. But seldom have I ever seen one so close, not through a window but out in the open, as I did this morning. I was out doing yard work and about to clean up, when I heard the distinctive rapid flutter. I looked up and about a meter away from my face there was a gray hummingbird checking me out. She looked me straight in the face for a solid minute and I looked back. She had a nice face, with pretty dark eyes. Maybe she was deciding whether the drops of sweat on my forehead were sweet. Maybe she was just curious. I said, "hi." Not surprisingly she just beat her wings, till she was satisfied and fluttered on her way.
