I read online this morning that Major League Baseball is considering starting their season next month, but with a big twist. All the teams would be isolated in Phoenix, and would play to empty stands at the many spring training facilities around town. The idea is that every team has its cable TV network and they'd still make money... Not a great idea.

First: you're going to try to keep 750 young men with more money than they can spend cooped up for who knows how long to trot them out every day to play ball? Yeah, you can bus them around the city to get where they are going to play, but how many hotel rooms are you going to have to reserve and for who knows how long? Where in town are you going to keep them? At the resorts? Doable but very expensive. At hotels? Cheaper but less secure in case half of them decide to go out to the store for beer at once.

Second: Phoenix does have a problem with the virus. Are you going to isolate the hotel staffs, too?

Third: You are talking May in Phoenix. I can't imagine all those millionaire ball players wanting to play anywhere in Phoenix except air-conditioned Chase field when it's over 100 Degrees F outside, and it will be. They might make a make-do field at the football stadium, but everything else is designed for March when the highest temperatures are in the 80s.

ETA: The Phoenix area has enough stadiums for half of a full schedule to be played at once. So they could have one game in the cool of early morning taped for later broadcast and one game live in the evening when it would not really be pleasant at each facility. But that would pretty much rule out extra workouts. Playing out in the heat of the day would not be ideal. Doing calisthenics outside in the middle of the day would be nuts. I suppose if they stayed at resorts there would be indoor workout facilities. But I still think the athletes getting cabin fever away from their families would quickly become a problem.

My store is one of those that is limiting the number of people inside at once, so I went early today to avoid standing in line just to get in. I did not go during the senior hour which is ridiculously early in the morning for people who've been retired for more than a month or two.

It looks like my store has mostly caught up with demand. There was no ramen today (I didn't actually want any) but there was canned soup. They had both TP and paper towels, though just store brand and I think you could only buy one roll of paper towels; there were no multiple roll packages of them. Otherwise there seemed to be enough of everything (even staples like rice and dry beans) and there were workers stocking all over the store.

About half the people, including me, were wearing masks. I can see why some bank lobbies are only open by appointment now. Heck, my bank wants you to take off your hat and sunglasses before you enter in normal times for their security, and just about everybody wears sunglasses all year round in AZ.

ETA: Oh, yes. I looked today and there were no cashiers working. There was self-checkout only.
