When I was a kid it seemed like there were a lot of things that other kids just loved that I could take or leave. These generally were not things I hated, just things I knew the other kids liked better than I did.
Nine things the other kids liked better:
[I've always liked fresh cherries a lot, but cooked or adulterated cherries and artificial cherry flavor have never been my favorites.]
1 Maraschino cherries. I made myself very popular when it became known I'd gladly give away the sicky sweet red thing from the top of my sundaes.
2 Cherry pie. Ask kids from my era what was their favorite pie and 7 or 8 out of 10 would say cherry. Apple pie for me.
3. Chocolate-covered cherries. They were my sisters' favorite candy. Personally I thought they were too sweet with all the goo inside.
4. Cherry suckers/lollipops. Put a pile of various suckers out and the other kids would dive for the red ones. I could leisurely take a yellow one (lemon) or green one (lime) and be happier. If I got stuck with a red sucker I always hoped it would be strawberry!
[I always liked peanuts and peanut butter and chocolate. I've always been a fan of chocolate-covered peanuts. But mix sugar in with peanut butter and wrap it in chocolate and I'd pick something else.]
5. Snickers bars. Given a choice, most other kids would always take a Snickers bar first. Give me a Milky Way every time!
6. Reese's peanut butter cups. They were not nearly as popular back when I was a kid, but most kids liked them much better than me. They ended up as the dregs of my Halloween candy. I ate them wishing I still had something else.
7. Chocolate ice cream. I've always liked chocolate and ice cream, even chocolate shakes, but chocolate ice cream was far down the list of kinds I liked. In Neapolitan ice cream (wide bands of Chocolate, Vanilla and Strawberry in the same box) it was okay, because it was easy to mix it 50/50 with vanilla.
8. Mac & cheese. I had no problem eating it. I just didn't love it the way some kids did. Would I order it in a restaurant, now that it's trendy. Surely you jest!
9. Meat loaf. I really did not like it, but was aware that when my mother served it, it was to make the food budget stretch so I mostly shut up and ate it. I dreaded the much worse version in the school cafeteria that looked and smelled like the canned dog food we fed our pooch. But some kids eyes lit up when they saw it in the lunch line.
