If it's not my cat trying to wake me in the morning up by jumping on the bed and meowing, it's the coyotes somewhere nearby singing to each other.
Yesterday, my great niece delivered some mandarin oranges from her mother's tree to my door, rang the bell, and left without waiting to say hi. Stupid Covid! Her mom isn't feeling well this week (the flu, I think) so she got the assignment. With the citrus this time, my niece (the mom) sent a few fresh picked serrano chilis with a note suggesting she didn't know whether they were hot or not. Chilis are like that. If you happen to grow a hot variety next to a mild variety, your hot peppers may turn out mild and your bell peppers may be fiery. I tried one of the serranos last night with a burrito. It was hot all right, very hot. Serrano chilis are hotter than jalapenos and just about as hot as I can stand. I can't eat habaneros, at all!
We had a "meat market" open up on a street nearby, last week. I'd call it a butcher shop, but I don't think they actually employ a butcher. It's in a terrible location. A convenience store failed there not long before I moved here. Because of the way the intersection is set up, you can only get in and out going in certain directions. It's safer that way. But it makes getting there or leaving toward the other ways a chore. From my house to the west, I have to take a left turn, go about a 1/4 mile then make a U-turn. (I could walk there, but there aren't any sidewalks along that busy street.) Coming from the east getting in is easy but trying to get back the way you came from is not possible without turning around in one of the scattered subdivisions. Coming from the north it would be worse trying to get back. At any rate I found my way in. They may have very high quality meat, but I couldn't afford to buy there. Hamburger with the same fat content costing a couple dollars a pound more than at the supermarket a half mile away? The rest of the meat is about as expensive. They have goat meat (for which I doubt there is high demand), bison, and alligator (at $50 per pound!). If the shop lasts a year, I'll be surprised.
