The first time I remember a lot of hype for a coming attraction on TV, was for Elizabeth's Coronation. It wasn't shown live in the U.S. The technology wasn't there yet. But the filmed highlights were shown in theaters (as one of the short subjects movie theaters used to play before the main movie) and on television. If I'm not mistaken at least one of the TV showings that year was hosted by Alistair Cooke as a part of a syndicated series he had on the UK and its arts.
I'm sure my older brother and sister informed me about what it all meant, before I saw any of it: who her father was and why she was becoming queen. She was quite young and beautiful in those days, like a princess ought to have been in a small child's mind. My siblings collected stamps so we had little pictures of her father, her uncle Edward VIII and even of Elizabeth and her sister Margaret as kids. In a year or so they'd be flooded with new stamps from all over the British Empire with her as queen.
I don't envy Charles. He's not the brightest fellow and the London press has given him a hard time most of his life. I do hope that like his grandfather (Albert) and great uncle (David) he won't choose to be known by the name his family calls him. Kings Charles haven't had the best record in British history. "George VII" would seem like a more hopeful choice for what probably won't be a long reign anyway.
