1. What is the coolest thing you've seen in nature?
Scenery: Crater Lake in Oregon in mid June with ten foot of snow on the ground all around the rim.
Wildlife: Probably a mother and kitten bobcat strolling across my backyard in broad daylight.
2. Could You Stop Shopping for an Entire Year?
They should have specified shopping for what. You need to keep getting fresh food on a regular basis and I wouldn't want strangers to pick what I'd get. Clothes wear out eventually. Like many people I shop for non-essentials to fight boredom, but I don't do it as often as many others do.
3. What National or International Events That You Lived Through Do You Remember Best?
I think most people will take this question to mean, "what important day in history do you remember best?" Unless you are unlucky, you won't actually live through events, like say, you were working in Manhattan on 9-11. Rather you'll remember the immediate reporting on them. I was sleeping when the Berlin Wall fell. I was busy and didn't hear about the twin towers on 9-11 till hours later. So, I have to say that kind of thing I remember best was when school came to a screeching halt after John Kennedy was shot. The broadcast the radio reports went over the school intercom and we listened in class including when the news finally broke that he'd died. They sent us home early. I remember it was a typical damp November day, wet leaves were everywhere as I walked up our long drive to wait for my parents to get home from work. A couple days later, on Sunday my parents went for a drive to reflect, I stayed home and saw Oswald shot dead on live TV. I was how my parents learned about that moment.
I was part of the Viet-Nam War protests in the spring of 1970, far from a leader but it was something actually I lived through. Suspecting something like that might happen again, new graduate students on fellowship were required to be deputized when I enrolled at Ohio State a couple years later. Yes, I was officially a deputy. I was glad there weren't any major disturbances by that time.( Read more... )
