For a dose of nostalgia I decided over the next few days to watch some VHS tapes of things I never got DVDs of. Had to dig deep in the closet. Some of the boxes were slightly stuck to the shelving, they haven't been moved in so long. Wow, the old picture on the HD screen is awful. How did we not all go blind watching Buffy first run?

The first thing I was watching that any of you would remember was the movie Alien (no 's'). Sigourney Weaver is so cute and baby-faced. OMG the special effects are so old-fashioned. The pre-Macintosh computer interface and graphics are hilarious. It looks like it was all done on an Apple II! Now, I don't feel so bad about my novel getting behind the times so fast. The movie was from 1979. Sure doesn't seem that long ago!

Handy technical hint-- watch videotape only on analog TVs, preferably no larger than 27" screens. The analog-to-digital converters in digital TVs can't handle the jitter and instability of the signal on tape, and they actually degrade the picture, often significantly. Even laserdisc looks better on analog TV, and it was a far more stable analog video signal.

Oh, and remember that shot of the slide rule on the computer console in the movie Apollo 13? Talk about the olden days!

LOL, I just checked and I still have my high school slide rule tucked away in a drawer! I bought a nicer one in college, but I may not have that one any more. Truly antiques.
