The further we get into the season the more average sports reporter and sports talk-show host looks like an idiot. (Of course Craig James is in a league by himself. Last night during the Stanford-USC game he loudly and earnestly informed the audience that 'undeniable' means 'you can't deny it.' After which I think the director told him to shut up.) Everyone was saying Alabama was the greatest team ever and a lock for the national championship game. The fact is that the SEC is a little overrated this year, lot's of good solid teams as usual. But it's not loaded with great one's like we've been told since before the season started. The two remaining undefeated SEC teams (LSU & Auburn) don't seem like good candidates to finish the season that way. Florida is down this year. Georgia is down. Tennessee is down. South Carolina has a decent shot at reaching the SEC championship game which is surprise to the news people.

I'm not sure there are any great teams this year. The limits on recruiting seem to finally be leveling things out in the sport. Ten years ago Utah and Boise couldn't have done as well as they are doing. TCU could and did, but it was an exception, not so far removed from the big-time.

Michigan's sure-fire (according to the press) Heisman Trophy winner had a rough time against Michigan St. We've seen his like before. He's indeed an exceptional athlete, but he's not good enough or patient enough to do it all, and unfortunately Michigan has no defense to make things less frantic for him.

Aloha Oe Missouri and Colorado said farewell to each other on the anniversary of the fifth-down game. It came at the right time. I think Missouri fans have finally gotten over it. I have. Colorado has lost to Mizzou five years in a row now. Let's face it, Missouri was an awful team in 1990. Losing to Colorado that year by 30 points wouldn't have been a surprise. So losing wasn't that big a deal when you think about it. Colorado was as good a team as the Big Eight had that year. I still think it was a mistake to make Colorado national champ that year with what amounted to 2 loses, but that's about the limit of my disgruntlement any more. ;o) Don't look for Missouri or many of the other Big 12 schools (including Nebraska) to schedule Colorado in the near future. It's not that they hate or resent them. It's just that playing football at 6000 feet is no fun. Ask Cal. They got murdered at Reno. At home yesterday, against UCLA with both the same offense as Nevada and doubtless better personnel over-all, Cal had a laugher. Colorado will probably fire their coach this year, since they haven't been very good at home and they are 0 for their last 15 out of the state. Good luck with Boulder, PAC-12, if they get a coach who knows about the importance of conditioning at altitude.

I could tell that South Carolina was winning last night by the yelling from the stadium, about a mile away. Nobody really thought they'd do it!

I know that sound. When I stopped going to the Ohio State games, it was interesting how well I could tell how things were going by the sound across campus. It was a great time of the week to hit the bookstores! ;o) It was also fun to watch the blimp over the stadium from my window.
