Arizona State made a big splashy announcement of their new football and basketball uniforms.

New Dominant color - Black?!? For home football and road basketball, solid black with some gold (actually yellow) trim. For some unknown reason on the football uniform the top 1/3 of the numerals will be yellow and the rest will be white.

Reduced to a trim color from the primary color- Maroon.

Okay, when ASU joined the PAC 10 they had a problem, their maroon and gold uniforms were blatant copies of USC's cardinal and gold unis. From a distance the old sunburst logo on the helmet didn't look a lot different from the Troy Trojan of those days. They needed to change then.

I would admit that the recent orangey-yellow helmets with the cute little sun devil "Sparky" on the side didn't do much for me. but letting the equipment company (I think it's Nike) do the art is a bit of a mistake. At least the school isn't paying for the make-over, the company paid part of the cost, and a donor is buying the first year's worth of uniforms.

The new helmet is plain black with a flamey pitchfork (actually a trident, but what do they know about Neptune in the desert, right?) pointing forward on the sides (because nobody's ever seen a Florida State helmet, right?). Apparently there will be a Sparky decal on the back of the new helmet, so at least the quarterback will get a good look at him during the season.

Not that I'm adverse to black and gold as colors, but you ought to stick to your own school colors. I wonder how much Colorado spent on those blue jerseys in the 1980s that were dumped as soon as the team started going from awful to very good. I used to keep track of teams that wore the 'wrong' colors, but with the equipment companies giving away uniforms to colleges (mostly for advertising purposes) at least for 'special occasions,' its pretty much every school that doesn't say hell no.

I haven't seen the schedule, but I know the Missouri Tigers are playing the Sun Devils this year. A whole lot o' black helmets with gold trim on the field. I hope the Tigers won't be adding maroon to the "M" this year. ;o) Fortunately the current Colorado helmet as it joins the PAC 12 is gold. Maybe that's why ASU is changing. After all it's easy to confuse orangey-yellow with gold, right?

ETA: the TV did not mention that the black uniform isn't for every home game. From the local newspaper site it looks like there's a "variant," probably the main uniform, in maroon with an orangey-yellow helmet (with trident). So it looks like the Sun Devils, won't play the Tigers wearing black and gold. Oh, pshaw. ;o)

I think it's real smart for a team that plays home games in Sun Devil stadium to show up wearing lots of black...

I'm not a fan of Black for Black's sake. It's not ASUs color...

Well, to be honest ASU never schedules home games in daytime. They rescheduled for daytime one for TV a few years ago, but I think whichever network it was learned their lesson. After dark all colors are equally oppressive. ;o)
