It's been awhile and these aren't the showiest.

But it is something of a landmark for me to get these flowers. You can buy a golden barrel thousands of miles from the desert and they will grow nicely to a very large size many places. (This one is about 12 inches [30+cm] across.) But one thing they won't do in a hurry or away from sunny climes is bloom. It doesn't take much save water and patience to get one to bloom here. But you won't see one bloom from seed in 15 years.

The camera doesn't do justice to how bright yellow the spines and the fuzz at the top are. It is in no way straw colored. And perhaps the yellow of the flowers does stand out a little too much!

The popular name for these barrels is Mother-in-law's Seat. ;o)
