midnightsjane I saw the premieres of Ringer and The Secret Circle last night. I'm not 100% certain that Ringer is a soap opera at all, but Secret Circle looks like Vampire Diaries with witches instead of vampires and werewolves, in other words, TEEN SOAP OPERA in all capitals. Both shows are likely to revolve about relationships (which a lot of men will refuse to watch), but there is a chance Ringer may not devolve into a plotless mish-mash of who's sleeping with whom this week. At least this week, with possibly one or two exceptions the people acted like real people might behave. There is no chance whatsoever that in Secret Circle any of the characters other the heroine and possibly her new best friend will act anything like human beings, especially not her boyfriend (the current one with whom she is "destined to be" and any others during the run of the show). Both shows had the heroine involved with her new best friend's significant other. While Secret Circle wants the audience to wallow in the emotion (or the ick, if you please) for a while, Ringer seems more interested at the moment about what the heck Bridget is going to do to survive and to move on. One's certainly solely about playing on emotions, the other may be about telling a story. That's a big difference.
The Secret Circle is for fans of (largely artificial) adolescent angst or for laughs. Ringer might appeal to a wider audience.

It falls into the same trope as Vamp Diaries and Gossip Girl - tv shows based on a best-selling series of Young Adult romance novels written mainly for a 18-25 year old female audience.
Ringer - by the way - does do every soap opera cliche in the book, all it's plot twists in the first episode were taken right out of soap operas. But it may get better, who knows?
I can't imagine you liking Secret Circle - it's teen horror romance by the guy who did Dawson's Creek.

I saw Ringer. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would, which surprised me. I caught several nods to Buffy, eating those cookies, and a line about making amends. Couple more too I can't recall right now. I did like that there was a definite difference between the two SMG characters, that wasn't just wardrobe.
