Believe it or not, we do have them here. This morning was the first of the season. I have a number of plants that don't like temps below freezing, and many neighbors have flowers that won't take that either. The back entrance (into my bathroom) is clogged with plants in pots and I have brown paper bags over a number of larger planted cacti in the back. We don't have so many freezing mornings in a year, but it is a fair sized chore, the evening before, to get everything taken care of in the garden when we do.

Just as long as it thaws out and is a toasty 70 degrees at day and above 32 at night by the 22nd.

Now I need a santa-hatted icon!

This is the edgiest time for my garden. Once the plants get fully dormant, I will worry less (really I mean the roses since I have some that are ten years old and good sized.)

I have this mental image of yours all wearing little paper hats. :-) Did you ever make those out of news paper? When I was nine we did that for my birthday.

The funny thing is seeing college-aged kids running around in shorts at the malls on mornings like this because they have little else to wear!

You know what? Alas, they don't care. I laugh at the kids who do that when it's 40-something degrees with a wind chill here, thinking how silly they are assuming that because it's California it can't be tit-chilly cold.

But they have thicker skin than me, I think.

Re: Paper hats

Yep. And the bigger they were, the more ridiculous we knew we looked!

A lot of people including nurseries and the botanical garden put large sized foam coffee cups over cactus tops for mornings like this. I think that looks funnier than my paper sandwich and grocery bags.

I just can't get over seeing kids in overcoats and shorts. I'm sure you have that, too.

THis weekend it was below zero.. today it is almost 70. We couldn't even BREATH at work it was so hot. Right, I'm running the air conditioner (to dry things out - and also because it's 80 in here)!!

Have to stay flexible I guess!

There are rumours of snow for tonight here in Vancouver. People are panicking, lining up to get their snow tires on.
Maybe you could get some of the row covers that farmers use to cover their tender crops..might make it less of a chore. Although the picture I have in my mind of all those paper bagged cacti is quite amusing.
