It was cool enough to open the windows for awhile early this morning, the first time since spring. I haven't had any rain yet, although Masq says she got dumped on, on the other side of town. This summer has been rough on the plants. Not all my cacti are from this climate. I have lost a few small ones here and there with all the heat and dry weather. Not an abnormal number of loses, but some 'old friends' didn't make it this year. There are plant sales in the fall. I'll get replacements and baby them next year.
An article in the paper here about a big cross country bicycle race back in Missouri, reminds me that I have been on national television. One Saturday morning a young fellow came knocking on my door encouraging me to go out and watch cyclists ride by my house as part of some race. I went outside and saw an ABC Sports camera set up in my neighbors' driveway. It was there because my neighbor and I lived at the top of the bluff above the river bottoms, and our road climbed up to our houses up one of the most brutal hills around. Cars got stuck on that hill every time it snowed. With the woods on my side and trees from both sides arching high over the cut for the road, it was a picturesque spot to have the camera set up.
My family had owned the place since I was very small. In junior high I used to ride my bike down to the bottoms, get a running start and try to ride to the top of the hill without getting off and walking. It took a number of weeks to get strong enough to do it. Of course, I had a one speed bike. The racers, in great condition and with umpty speeds to work with, blasted up the hill pretty fast. I scrambled down to the road and watched for several minutes as a number of the leading riders went by. By this point I realized I was supposed to be 'the huge, enthusiastic crowd' watching this race. But it was a little boring. So taking advantage of a lull when there were no riders nearby I went back into the house. I did turn on the TV and a few minutes later there on the screen were more riders pumping up the hill past my woods.
I may have been on national TV early in grad school as well. I had really bad tickets down on the field near the corner of the end zone. During the first game we had a wide receiver land in the stands right in from of us. For televised games one of the big camera positions was set up in front of us, thankfully not blocking our view of the field. I don't remember the camera being on us, but if it did pan around there was a pretty young lady sitting close by every game. ;o)
