The paper this morning had some interesting things.
Locals with fun names.
They interviewed a Mary Christmas about her name. She grew up with a good old Slavic name Mary Dvorak. She said she dated a guy named Richard who for some reason wouldn't tell her his last name. When he finally told her his name was Christmas, it was her mother who instantly decided it was a match made in heaven. Her license plate reads - MXMAS.
They also talked to a Noel Kringle. It's pronounced Noll since he's a guy. Not too surprisingly everybody calls him Chris, anyway.
A Mrs. Patricia Claus said that when she was a first grade teacher, she used to tell the kids if they didn't behave, she'd tell her husband. It worked very well, she says.
Migrants
400,000 adults changed to AZ driver's licenses from other states this year, including Masq (that last part wasn't in the paper). Like Masq, nearly a quarter of them came from California. The border patrol caught a 10,000 more illegal migrants than the number of those drivers. No telling how many they missed. As the economy goes sour they are really being persecuted. The point is that if there was a reasonable way for most of them to enter legally I think most would do it legally. It's easier for the few real criminals among them to hide in our society than those who want to work.
Fires
Compared to 2006 Arizona had about 1/3 fewer wildfires this year, interesting considering how bad things got in California this year. The number of fires both from human mischief + carelessness and from lightning dropped about the same percentage. Good winter and spring rain helped a lot. There were also three earthquakes in the state shown on the fire map for reasons that were not explained.
Heat
We had a record 32 days with highs over 110 degrees (44C) this year. Today won't be one of them. It's down close to freezing for the first time this season. My more exotic cacti don't like either extreme. But most that I have don't mind it.
