I finally watched the DVD of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix I bought just after Christmas. I have to say that movie loses a lot when it's not on a giant theater screen.
Football follies
I can't remember so many bad games on New Year's Day. Not that there weren't just as many good games. Florida was the only favored team that lost. It was good to see Michigan win after a year of nonsense about how lousy the Big 10 is supposed to be compared to the SEC. Virginia, despite being given a load of points, ended up playing one too many close games. Tennessee and Wisconsin sounded like a decent old-fashioned game where the first half actually meant as much the second. But since I don't have cable I didn't see it. For a game everyone thought would be really good before the kickoff, Missouri-Arkansas got out of hand early. Arkansas clearly missed having someone in charge of the team for longer than just the day. It was interesting that both of the Heisman candidates were pretty much stopped cold. Yes, McFadden got his token 100 yards, and Daniel had a nice first quarter. But over all, neither looked award-worthy. Missouri just had another rabbit to pull out of the hat and Arkansas didn't. The Rose Bowl looked like the set-up it was. I hope Illinois spends the money it got for the beating it took wisely. Hawaii unfortunately learned that upsets (Boise over OU last year) are upsets and wins over lower tier teams in big conferences (this year's Washington) don't mean much when the big boys are ready to play like they can.
