Here's the one I've been waiting for plus another that bloomed yesterday morning

Bright colors other than yellow are especially welcome so I've been watching for this one. The plant underneath doesn't look like much here, but they can grow into an attractive round shape.
Rinconensis
Thelocatus rinconensis.

Not so bright, but still interesting are these red-brown flowers.
Uncinatus
Sclerocactus uncinatus.

Another of my yucca has started to develop a bloom stalk, near the one I showed the other day.. I've been waiting for several years for this one to bloom. It's one of the most prominent plants looking out my back window.

I'd started worrying whether the local bees had succumbed to the problems that have been killing off bees all over the country. But since the weather has turned warm they are visiting my fairy dusters, and senna bushes like they should.

"Thelocatus rinconensis."

"Rincón" means "corner" in Spanish. I don't suppose this name means it grows in corners? I can't tell from the picture if this one does....

You're right about the meaning. It also means 'a place of privacy.' I think applied to the cactus it means it grows off by itself, (off in a corner without the corner!)

I tend to think of rincón as being 'round,' which isn't correct, because the isolated building of an Indian pueblo is often called 'Casa rinconada' and that usually is a round kiva!
