Here's a picture of a Phoenix native, of nearly so. I understand that its native range actually begins just south of the mountains I can see from my south facing windows.

This is one of the three types of large barrel cactus that grow in this area; one to the East, one to the West and this one to the South. These can be distinguished from the others because these only have large spines of about the same size giving it a fairly clean look. The other two kinds also have smaller spines growing from the same points as the large spines, which help shade the plant. Like many cactus this one's flowers are striped.

I got my duplicate license I talked about last week in the mail, today. It's got a cool picture of the Grand Canyon on it instead of a small drawing of Sedona-like cliffs, and for some reason I still look like I did 9 years ago. ;o)
