The second season started last night. It's 1559 and Francis is king. When we left off last season. Mary had just shut the portcullis behind Francis who has ridden out across the plague filled land to find Lola. No need for spoilers. Obviously there was plague and stuff in the the current episode. Looked like the make-up department looked up Black Death on Wikipedia, just like I did before watching the show. Very impressive make-up. With so many shows going to insane lengths to attract attention to themselves at the start of this season, Reign kept its usual level of madness and actually looked quite confident in what it does. It was a pretty good episode. I hope those who liked the show last year and who missed it can see it on the net somewhere.
The facts: the current Ebola outbreak has brought the concern over deadly contagious diseases to worldwide consciousness since Reign set out on its current path at the end of last season. If I'm reading correctly Bubonic Plague did not strike France hard during Francis II's reign, but it came not long after. It kept coming back in force in Europe until the early 1800s when rodent control became a serious matter. The Black Plague still exists. For example it is endemic in the rodent population of parts of the sparcely populated highlands in Northwestern New Mexico and Northeastern Arizona. It is not unusual for a small number of cases of Plague to occur among the Native Americans who make their homes in those highlands every year or so. This year a rodent carrying plague was found in the outskirts of Flagstaff, Arizona, which is one of the major tourist entryways to the Grand Canyon. It's not a great cause for alarm, but tourists do need to be warned not to approach prairie dogs colonies or the cute ground squirrels in the area.
