Within the last hour Republican Martha McSally conceded making Kyrsten Sinema Arizona's first Democratic US Senator in decades. In the campaign McSally struggled at first with name recognition. Then the state was bombarded with nasty attack ads from outside sources. It was the ugliest campaign, I've ever had the misfortune to be exposed to. At one point an ad had a former county prosecutor, who was voted out for trying to use his office to intimidate his political opponents, saying Sinema basically didn't care about child prostitution. I suspect that ad did more harm than good, especially among those who remember the guy. In general, the attack ads continued, but that one disappeared after about a week. There was nastiness on both sides but the national 'Republican Senate Campaign Committee' (who knows where all that money came from) was really the source of the worst of it.

Oddly there is a chance that McSally could still be a US Senator soon. The current Republican place holder for John McCain does not want to serve long. He could resign any time, and the Republican Governor, who was easily reelected, could pick McSally or any one else he chooses. So possibly McSally could still be Arizona's first female US Senator.
