I don't wear my winter jacket very often. It usually gets cold (below freezing) here in the morning for a few days every winter. It usually happens between about the 20th of December and 10th of January, but never more than a few days in that period every year. Otherwise it stays in the 40s (above 5C) as the coldest in the morning. We've just come off a couple of freezing mornings and today was only slightly warmer than freezing. I wore my winter jacket to the store.
I'm nice and warm, but I notice a woman walking into the grocery store far ahead of me. She too is wearing a winter jacket, but... She is also wearing pants that only come down to her knees and floppy slippers with no socks. She's got her hands stuffed in her jacket pockets as if she's cold. Granted it will probably get too warm for a winter jacket this afternoon, but at 9 in the morning? If you look around on days like this there will be people wearing shorts and short sleeve shirts. Not me!
At the other extreme, a lady employee asked me on my way out of the store if I was cold. This winter jacket is the same one I used to shovel snow in back in Missouri. (It doesn't get worn much, so it's not wearing out.) It's not long but it's warm and I don't wear thin pants. Then she asked me if I had gloves. Err... it's above freezing. I can make it through the parking lot without passing out from hypothermia. Maybe the lady has a six-year-old she worries about. I am old but I do understand understand how I need to dress myself after living here for a couple decades.
