A couple of days ago I mentioned seeing a big column of smoke coming off a spot in the mountains north of town. Yesterday, they evacuated the houses in the foothills closest to the mountain ridge. This morning I don't see any smoke on the mountain. Doesn't mean that fire is out, just that it probably died down over night. Yesterday afternoon there was a distinct smell of smoke from brush up on the mountain. At dinner it was vaguely like eating a barbecue cooked with poorly chosen wood. This morning there is a distinct smell of burning garbage. I looked at the local TV station's website and indeed very early this morning there was a fire at a landfill on this side of town. Two noticeable kinds of smoke almost at once. Not good for those with respiratory problems.
ETA: I went for a drive toward downtown this morning. Traffic seems back to normal although not all businesses are open yet. There was no sign of fire on this side of the mountain that I could see and no column of smoke, but the whole sky was hazy from lingering smoke. With a little clearing of the air since earlier today, I can see the red dye patches on the mountain where planes have been dropping fire retardant.
