Day 99 for me in self-isolation.

Cases of the virus have exploded, here. I think many 30 somethings are giving up, and deciding to risk catching the virus now, and hope they will be immune later. Even if their hopes were reasonable, the symptoms of those who've had moderate cases that don't belong in the hospital, should be enough to make them act more carefully.

(I'm not sensitive to poison ivy. For people who are, it would be a bad idea to follow my exact path through the woods without looking carefully... But I don't roll in the stuff. You can get the sap on your clothes and people who are really sensitive can get it from brushing against contaminated clothing.) Be kind to yourself and others. Self-protect.

Losing track of time: Several times this past Sunday I thought it was Saturday, though I kept reminding myself it wasn't. Even walked up to the mail box. The exercise won't hurt me, but I felt silly when I realized what I'd done. My niece and I were talking Sunday evening, and she'd lost track of the time since she started being more careful (she's back to work now). She thought the closures started in February, and hadn't seen her mother except through a window since. I saw my sister at my neice's house, the last time she did, so I know it was March.

The forest fire on the mountain keeps on burning, the folks who'd been evacuated from the west end of the foothills have been home for several days. But the small community at the very top of the mountain range was evacuated yesterday. I see smoke today a lot of places beyond the ridge. They tell me the mountain top community was hit hard by a fire in 2003. I used to live in the woods. Once or twice in close to 50 years I was afraid of a fire there. At least here in Arizona, living in a true forest is a worse gamble.

What took them so long?.. I remember as a kid in the 50s thinking "Aunt Jemima" (famous American brand of pancake syrup) was more insensitive than catchy. Now 60 odd years later they've decided to change it. They haven't decided what it will become yet. They ditched the old "jolly slave" portrait on the label, long ago for a more modern looking (1950s-ish) black woman. But the Jim Crow era name is still on the shelves for a while.
