I went to a restaurant and got take out on Saturday for my birthday. Very nice for a change from a half year of my own cooking. The schools particularly, the university in town (University of Arizona), are having trouble with kids there to party... partying. But generally adults past that stage are behaving themselves... There was a local restaurant owner on TV the other night, complaining about "tyranny" for getting a citation for not following the rules in his place. I feel for business owners who are being hurt, but they ought to understand this is an emergency. Throwing caution to the winds may be profitable, but this is no joke and people will die if we're not careful, even now. There isn't going to be business as usual any time soon... I guess I can say I've started doing my part for local businesses. I went three places yesterday and bought something at each.
The birds: Not surprisingly we have cactus wrens here. I have a couple tree-sized prickly pears in my yard, and the cactus wrens like to come peck holes in the fruit for the seeds and juicy pulp. Then hummingbirds come to get to the moisture and bees go for it as if it was nectar. I saw a cactus wren perched up on the side of a saguaro the other day; not exactly a rare sight. But it made me wonder how it could perch up there without getting stabbed with the spines. On the prickly pears it's easy to see how a bird could grab on and not touch any spines. On a saguaro though the spines are very dense... It was Friday I think. I heard what sounded like someone beating their fist softly on the side of the house. I looked out the window to see if the neighbors were hammering on something. Couldn't see anything. The soft banging continued and I got curious enough to go out and look where it was coming from. Up on the peak of the roof a raven was hoping around having a good old time. I couldn't hear its calls inside, but I sure could hear it dancing around up there. I may be weird, but I like ravens... Later that day I walked up the street to our communal mail boxes and saw a huge bird flying soaring over toward the National Park a few miles to the east of here. It was too far away to identify. It could have been a golden eagle, but most likely it was a vulture, a buzzard as we call them. It reminded me of a day back in Phoenix when I saw several vultures circling to the north of the store where I was. It made me chuckle because it looked like they were circling over the spot where I knew there was a bank.
Election coming: It seems like there are more candidates with weird names these days. There is one lady running in my area with the melodious last name Wadsack... We have two State Constitutional amendments on the ballot. There are lots of signs on the street for and against the one to raise income taxes on the wealthy (incomes above $400,000 a year) for schools. Oddly the one concerning legalizing recreational marijuana doesn't have much publicity one way or the other. I saw a lonesome sign for it yesterday with a picture of the Grand Canyon. Nature-Lovers for Weed? Don't ask me!
