It's been a rough summer, but finally the end of summer bloomers are beginning to show buds. Today the first one bloomed

This is pretty busy on top with last year's fruit and this year's buds and flowers. I usually pull the old fruit off in summer so the birds can get to the seeds, but the heat and sun have been so brutal this year that even the fruit may make a difference whether the growing top gets damaged or not. I'll remove the old fruit soon because it will get cooler (below 110 F) and the new flowers and any new fruit should protect the top well enough for another year. This cactus is about the size of a soccer ball.
