Cut to spare you the sports

I hardly believe it. It was getting obvious that scoring was out of hand the last few years and that something would eventually be done about it. The games were going on forever and defense was becoming a joke. But it is surprising that they did it so soon. The huge change? After decades of gradually getting more lenient about offensive holding, the NCAA decided to crack down this year. I think it's a good thing. It will make the game more varied. Passing will be more of a challenge and less of a given.

It's not that holding will go away. Offensive linemen on pass plays are still pretty much holding on every play. But now it looks like if a defender can penetrate far enough to get the offensive lineman sideways to the line of scrimmage hanging on, they are going to call holding, where as the last few years unless the defensive guy was tackled they'd ignore it. Doesn't sound like much of a change, but the higher number of times that holding is being called is certainly noticeable in the first few weeks.

Scores between comparable schools are way down. Two of the three quarterbacks with the most passing yardage in the FBS last weekend lost their games. It's the way it should be with one dimensional offenses. Teams like Missouri and Texas Tech are going to have to run more to be successful.

The sports reporters haven't figures it out yet. "Why aren't Tebow and McCoy putting up such gaudy numbers any more?" they're asking. Heck they're winning and wining handily. That's all their fans should be asking of them. The writers and the sports talkers are just going to have to get used to lower scores again.
