The kids in my neighborhood started back to school today. I can't get used to school starting before Labor Day (the first Monday in September) let alone starting early in August. I don't know the rationale here.
I voted by mail last week, but election day is still weeks away, so I keep getting really annoying political phone calls and lots of political junk mail.
President Obama made a lot of noise about the rate of college graduation these days among US kids, but I don't think he said a word about the real problem: the rapid rise in the cost of college over the last decade.

I did hear Obama talk about increasing Pell grants to help pay for college, but nothing about the high cost of college itself. It's not just the last decade, either--I went to college in the '70s, before tuitions starting shooting up. I remember reading in the school paper how Ivy League schools were starting to charge a lot more & knowing it was going to become much more widespread.
